Description

My Feelings Were One-Way, Never Reaching You, Fading into Mist (Baneya)

Ever since being dumped by the woman he’d been planning to marry, twenty-five-year-old Kashiwagi Hibiki has been dragging himself through a rotten, hollow life. On the night of his twenty-fifth birthday, he receives a single phone call that disrupts everything.

The caller is Kondo Mizuki, his close friend since high school and his first love from middle school. Hearing from her after so long, Hibiki assumes it’s a birthday greeting. Instead, she pleads for help. Without fully understanding the situation, he rushes to her side.

When Hibiki arrives at Mizuki’s apartment in Nagoya, he finds not only a tense and wary Mizuki, but also Shimura Akiko, a mutual middle school classmate, with visible injuries on her face. Akiko has been living with a man who abused her, and Mizuki has been sheltering her to protect her from the ongoing domestic violence.

At first, Hibiki suggests involving the police, frustrated at being dragged into trouble. However, after listening to Mizuki’s explanation, he decides to let Akiko take refuge in his own apartment instead.

That decision marks the beginning of an unusual shared life, one man and two women living together under the same roof.

As the three support one another, Akiko’s domestic violence situation is eventually resolved. During that time, Hibiki finds his old feelings for Mizuki rekindling. Yet he also becomes painfully aware that he isn’t someone she sees as a romantic partner. While he’s sinking into that realization, Akiko begins making active advances toward him. Moved by a sense of responsibility to protect a former victim of abuse, Hibiki starts dating Akiko.

Mizuki strongly opposes their relationship. Hibiki can’t understand why, and while Mizuki struggles with her feelings, she ultimately accepts their relationship and offers her blessing.

As spring arrives and nearly a year of shared living passes, Mizuki returns to her hometown of Okazaki, bringing the room-sharing arrangement to an end. Hibiki and Akiko continue living together alone, and one year later, they get married.

During their marriage, Hibiki constantly worries about Akiko, treating her with care and pouring himself into devoted love. Gradually, however, Akiko’s attitude begins to change. Sensing something is wrong and unable to shake his anxiety, Hibiki makes a choice he never thought he would.

In order to ease his fears, he decides to check his wife’s phone.
