Chapter 15 Serves Them Right

Serves Them Right

ā€œUh, umā€¦ thisā€¦ā€

On the low table, alongside the cute new dishes and the side dishes Kinoshita-senpai prepared, thereā€™s an unfamiliar dish added to the spread.

ā€œAhaha, when I went to get my hair cut today, I bought these dishes too. You know, after how tough things were yesterday and the day beforeā€¦ā€

ā€œO-Oh, I see. Sorry I didnā€™t notice.ā€

ā€œN-No, no! I should be the one apologizing. Even though Iā€™m being allowed to stay hereā€¦ sorry!ā€

For some reason, we both apologized at the same time, awkwardly looking down.

ā€œW-Well, how about we start eating?ā€

ā€œY-Yeah, letā€™s do that!ā€

Since continuing to fidget wouldnā€™t help, I broke the silence, clasped my hands together, and said,

ā€œā€œItadakimasu.ā€ā€

Picking up my chopsticks, I reached for my bowl.

For the record, Kinoshita-senpaiā€™s dishes included spinach ohitashi and simmered squid with taro.

Andā€¦ the steaming hot pork miso soup and tamagoyaki were probably made by Kakizaki-san.

With that in mind, I decided to try the tamagoyaki first.

ā€œā€¦(stare)ā€

ā€¦Yep, Iā€™m being stared at intensely.

Itā€™s not just staringā€”she seems a bit restless, too.

Pretending not to notice her gaze, I popped the tamagoyaki into my mouth in one bite.

ā€œItā€™s delicious!ā€

ā€œR-Really?ā€

ā€œYeah! Itā€™s so fluffy and soft. When I bite into it, the flavor of the dashi spreads through my mouthā€¦ Wow, I could eat this forever!ā€

ā€œAhaha, s-so glad to hear that!ā€

The moment I praised her, Kakizaki-sanā€™s face lit up with the brightest smile Iā€™d ever seen.

And honestly, I wasnā€™t exaggeratingā€”it really was delicious.

ā€œW-Well then, next up is the pork miso soupā€¦ā€

I switched the bowl in my hands for the soup bowl and took a sip of the pork miso soup.

ā€œAhhā€¦ The pork miso soup is amazing too. Itā€™s so warm and comfortingā€¦ā€

ā€œR-Right? Since itā€™s a bit cold today, I thought pork miso soup would be perfect!ā€

Honestly, the girl in front of me couldnā€™t look happier if she tried.

ā€œBut Kakizaki-san, youā€™re really good at cooking, huh?ā€

ā€œAhaha, actually, the high school I went to was an all-girls school, and they really focused on home economics classesā€¦ā€

According to Kakizaki-san, the all-girls high school she attended put a lot of emphasis on skills like cooking and sewing as part of an old-fashioned ā€œbride trainingā€ program.

Yeah, I canā€™t deny it sounds outdated.

ā€œBut wait, do schools like that even exist these days? I can hardly believe itā€¦ā€

ā€œY-Yeah. I think you might have heard of it, though. Itā€™s called ā€˜Doujo High: Doukei Women University Affiliated Schholsā€™ā€¦ā€

ā€œEh?! You went to that school, Kakizaki-san?!ā€

Hearing her alma mater, I couldnā€™t help but be shocked.

Even I, who came from the countryside, knew about Doukei Women University Affiliated Schools. Itā€™s one of the most prestigious girlsā€™ schools in Japan, attended by daughters of elite families from political and financial circles.

Andā€¦ the girls attending Saturdayā€™s mixer are from Doukei Women University, meaning theyā€™re likely graduates of that high school as wellā€¦

ā€œA-Ahahaā€¦ Well, at the time, I did have the title of ā€˜company presidentā€™s daughterā€™ā€¦ā€

Kakizaki-san added, ā€œThough, I was just a nouveau riche daughter,ā€ sticking out her tongue playfully and looking a bit embarrassed.

ā€œI-I seeā€¦ Kakizaki-san, youā€™re really amazingā€¦ā€

ā€œIā€™m not amazing at allā€¦ In the end, I went to that school with money that was earned by deceiving peopleā€¦ā€

As she said that, Kakizaki-sanā€™s expression suddenly turned sorrowful.

Sighā€¦ We just agreed last night not to bring up her past, and here I am, messing up alreadyā€¦

But still.

ā€œā€¦Your cooking skills have nothing to do with anyone elseā€™s money or circumstances. Theyā€™re your own talent. Soā€¦ I think you should be proud of that.ā€

ā€œā€¦! T-Thank you.ā€

After that, we both got embarrassed and finished dinner in silence.

ā€œOh, right.ā€

While getting ready for bed after taking a bath, I suddenly remembered something and called out to Kakizaki-san.

ā€œWhat is it?ā€

ā€œWell, you know, I was wondering about the cancellation process for the room next doorā€”howā€™s that going?ā€

ā€œAh, yeah. I took care of that today tooā€¦ā€

She answered, then quietly lowered her gaze.

ā€œā€¦Did something happen?ā€

ā€œA-Ahaha, itā€™s nothing majorā€¦ Itā€™s just that apparently, the landlord also got an anonymous letter, and when I told her I was moving out, she looked really happy, thatā€™s allā€¦ā€

She bit her lip tightly.

ā€¦Just how much more does she have to suffer?

Why does she have to keep experiencing such unreasonable thingsā€¦?!

ā€œH-Hahaā€¦ Well then, serves them right, huh?ā€

ā€œEhā€¦?ā€

ā€œThink about it. Those hopeless jerks who think they drove you out, and the gleeful landlordā€”theyā€™d never imagine youā€™re living comfortably right next door. Doesnā€™t that make you feel like youā€™ve gotten the last laugh?ā€

I said that to her in a playful tone, trying my best to sound lighthearted.

Hoping, even just a little, that she wouldnā€™t dwell on it too much.

Hoping, even just a little, that she could feel like she had won.

Then.

ā€œA-Ahahaā€¦ Really, youā€™re such an idiotā€¦ Being so kindā€¦ to someone like meā€¦ someone like meā€”uwaah!ā€

ā€œWhaā€”?!ā€

Suddenly, Kakizaki-san threw herself into my chest and started sobbing uncontrollably.

Iā€¦ was betrayed by Hiyori, became wary of women, unable to trust themā€¦ So, normally, having someone cry on me like this would be unbearable.

And yet.

ā€”Squeeze

ā€œā€¦Iā€™ll never kick you out. You can stay here foreverā€¦ okay?ā€

ā€œSniffā€¦ Hicā€¦ Yeahā€¦ Yeahā€¦!ā€

I held her close and gently patted her back until her sobs subsided.
