āā¦(shake shake)ā
The woman shook her head, her expression clouded with sorrow.
āI-I think calling the police would definitely be better, you know? Before something happensā¦ā
āā¦ā
She bit her lip and lowered her gaze.
Just why is this person so determined to avoid the police?
Could it beā¦ sheās a criminalā¦? No, that canāt be itā¦
But, the words she shouted earlierā¦
āAnd what good would that do? No matter where I go, theyāll find me, chase me down, corner me, harass me in every way imaginable, and take away my place to belong!ā
āYouāre just like them, arenāt you!? You think the world would be better off without meā¦ donāt you!? Someone like meā¦ someone like meā¦!ā
Soā¦ this woman is being harassed by someone. And from the sound of it, theyāre seriously obsessive.
Thatās not all. Itās like sheās convinced herself that even I hold the same disdain for her.
ā¦Alright.
āUmā¦ may I ask, have we, uhā¦ met beforeā¦?ā
āN-Noā¦ā
āThen why did you assume I thought itād be better if you disappearedā¦?ā
ā!?ā
Ahā¦ I guess I asked something I shouldnāt haveā¦
āI-I mean! You donāt have to answer if you donāt want to!ā
Realizing my mistake, I hurriedly tried to smooth things over.
I didnāt want to pry unnecessarily, and besidesā¦ she looked like she might cry againā¦
And yet.
āā¦Once you get to know me, youāll think the same thing.ā
She murmured this quietly, her gaze dropping.
Her trembling hands gripped the mug tightly.
Iā¦
āā¦Thatās not true.ā
For some reason, I found myself saying that.
After all, I donāt avoid certain peopleāI avoid pretty much everyone.
So, no matter what I learn about her, it wouldnāt change things any further than they already are.
āYouāre lying.ā
She glared at me sharply, her voice cutting through any room for rebuttal.
And then.
āWould you still say that after hearing my name?ā
āYour nameā¦?ā
Not understanding what she meant, I instinctively asked back.
Was she implying her name was cursed or something?
She clenched her fist tightly, as if gathering her resolve, and took a deep breath.
āā¦My name is Kakizaki Hatsune.ā
She told me.
āUh, umā¦ should I call you Kakizaki-sanā¦?ā
āā¦You can call me whatever you like. I donāt care.ā
Even after confirming her name, it didnāt ring any bells for me. And apparently, my lack of reaction annoyed her.
āMore importantly, doesnāt the surname āKakizakiā sound familiar to you?ā
āKakizaki? The surnameā¦?ā
āā¦If you search online, youāll understand.ā
Seeing my puzzled expression, she urged me to look it up.
Doing as I was told, I pulled out my smartphone and searched for āKakizakiāā¦ andā¦ huh?
The only results that came up were news articles from two years ago.
It was about a massive fraud case involving a company called āKakizaki Farm.ā
āā¦Could it beā¦?ā
āFufuā¦ Thatās right. The president of Kakizaki Farm, the one behind that fraud case, is my father.ā
Kakizaki-san curled her lips into a wry smile.
āSee? Youāre disappointed, arenāt you? Iām the daughter of a conman. And yet, I take no responsibility, donāt repay the people he deceived, and just live my life as if nothing happened.ā
āā¦ā
She shrugged her shoulders, laughing bitterly at herself.
Butā¦ there was something off about her words.
āā¦Then, those suspicious people earlier, are they the ones hounding you because of this?ā
āFufuā¦ yes. They find out where I live, expose it online, and keep harassing me. They leave hateful, abusive letters in my mailbox and, at their worst, even graffiti my door.ā
āā¦ā
āThatās not all. They dig up where I work and anonymously tell everyone Iām āthe daughter of a conman,ā making it impossible for me to stay.ā
Ahā¦ Iāve heard before that families of criminals are endlessly pursued like this, treated as if they donāt even have basic human rightsā¦
āWhy donāt you call the police?ā
āFufuā¦ I did, during a similar incident before. Do you know what they said to me? āYouāre the family of a criminal, so youāll have to put up with a little of this.āā
What the heck is thatā¦? The people who are supposed to protect others, why are they complicit in the harassmentā¦?
āAnd if the police get involved again, Iāll have to move out of here, tooā¦ā
I seeā¦ even the landlord wouldnāt want to deal with trouble, huhā¦
āFufuā¦ But now that theyāve found me, itās only a matter of time before I have to leave anywayā¦ā
Saying this, she glanced toward the door and forced a bitter smile.
But those deep sapphire eyes of hers were brimming with tearsā¦
And then.
āā¦Iām justā¦ so tiredā¦ā
As she whispered this with a faint smile, a single tear traced its way down her cheek.
Ahahaā¦ when I opened the lid, it really was incredibly troublesomeā¦!
āBANG!
Without thinking, I struck the wall with my fist as hard as I could.
What the hell is thisā¦? Sheās had to face even more absurdity than someone like me.
Sheās been through far worse pain than I have.
āā¦Iāll return to my room now.ā
With that, she quickly stood up. She probably assumed that, like everyone else, Iād come to despise her.
Ughā¦ What the heck am I doingā¦?
āI-Iām sorryā¦! When I hit the wall, it wasnāt out of anger at you, Kakizaki-san. It was because ofā¦ those people who chase you and the policeā¦ā
ā!?ā
As I bowed deeply and apologized, I heard the sound of her catching her breath.
āB-But! I-Iām the daughter of a conman, and you donāt even want to breathe the same air as me, rightā¦?ā
āThatās not true at allā¦ā
āB-But youāre keeping your distance from meā¦ā
āHahaā¦ The truth is, Iāmā¦ not great with people. Especially womenā¦ā
I said this with a self-deprecating smile.
āIn any caseā¦ What I understand is that the one who committed the crime was your father, the president of Kakizaki Farm, and you yourselfā¦ are also a victim.ā
āAhā¦ā
The moment I said that, tears began to pour from her eyes.
āI-Iām the daughter of the conman who committed fraudā¦ I have to make amends to the people he hurtā¦!ā
āWhy? If I may say so, isnāt the one whoās at fault your father? Heās the one who should atone, isnāt he?ā
āBut! I have to be unhappy for the sake of the victims! Thatās what everyoneā¦ says! Everyone does!ā
āI donāt care what everyone says. At the very least, I donāt think, even for a second, that you need to be unhappy.ā
āIā¦ Iā¦ Aahhhhhhhhhhh!ā
And thenā¦ she buried her face in her hands and broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
