Chapter 22 My Wife vs. Lawyer

My Wife vs. Lawyer

“Nice to meet you, Rina-san. I’m Tokudo, a lawyer.”

Tokudo-san gently placed her business card on the desk and greeted Rina.

Her face, which had previously smiled at me, had completely changed and was now filled with contempt as if she were looking at dirt.

Rina was extremely flustered by Tokudou-san’s greeting.

“Eh, a lawyer…? Wh, why…?”

She seemed completely confused.

Rina’s face turned pale, a rare sight, indicating that she couldn’t comprehend the situation.

After a moment’s pause, I spoke to her.

“Rina, let’s get a divorce.”

“Ha…?”

I took out the divorce paper I had received from the city hall in advance and placed it on the desk. My column was already filled in.

But Rina widened her eyes and stared at it blankly, her mouth agape.

Her already pale face became even paler as if she might faint.

She probably never expected me to bring up the divorce. She must have underestimated me.

“D, divorce…? Eh…? No… why…?”

Unable to believe my sudden declaration of divorce, Rina held her head and trembled.

Tears welled up in her eyes. It may have been the first time I’d ever seen her cry.

But those tears did not touch my heart.

“T, this is a joke, right? You’re going to abandon me? It’s a bad joke, you know?”

I didn’t want to exchange any more words, so I gave Rina an extremely cold look to show my seriousness.

But it seemed to hurt Rina more than I expected.

She trembled even more than before, and tears streamed down her face. However, perhaps out of pride, she didn’t let out a single sob.

Instead, she tried to touch me again, as if to cling to me.

But I rejected her again and slapped her hand away.

“Eh?!”

“Don’t touch me; you’re dirty.”

“Ma, Makoto… !?”

Rina was so surprised by my outburst that she rubbed her slapped hand and looked extremely flustered.

I blurted it out, but the words seemed to hurt Rina even more. She shed even more tears. But Tokudou-san and I showed no mercy. We had prepared for this day.

“Uchida Rina-san. With all due respect, it’s only natural for you to be rejected. Don’t you remember what you did to him before?”

“Huh…? What…? It doesn’t concern you, so just leave us alone…!”

Annoyed by Tokudou-san’s intrusion, Rina turned on her, sounding a bit stronger.

Is she stupid? Of course it concerns her.

She came all the way to this dirty place just to get me and Rina a divorce.

She’s my lawyer; of course, it concerns her.

But before I could answer, Tokudou-san narrowed her eyes and glared back at Rina.

“That is not true. I am a lawyer hired by Uchida Makoto-san. That makes it my concern.”

“W, what… Don’t joke around! What kind of divorce are you talking about? Why do I have to get divorced…?!”

Perhaps because her opponent was Tokudou-san and not me, Rina returned to her assertive self and raised her voice.

Staring coldly at Rina, Tokudou-san sighed.

“Oh, where’s that weak look from before? You seem to have quite a duality.”

“G, th, this… ugh!”

After Tokudou-san’s sudden remark, Rina put her hand over her mouth and quickly ran out of the room.

Ah, she probably went to the bathroom. I mean, she can’t hold her liquor very well, but she drinks too much anyway. I guess she had to get by, but… I have no sympathy for her.

“…I’m so sorry, Tokudou-san. Rina is in such a state….”

I apologized to her, feeling embarrassed that my family’s ugliness had been exposed, even though we were going to separate.

“No, I should be the one to apologize. I made a rather rude remark. But you won’t show any mercy, will you?”

“Yes, please do everything you can.”

When I asked again, Tokudou-san nodded slightly with a small smile.

After waiting for a while, Rina returned, and her complexion slightly improved after vomiting.

“…So, what’s going on? Why do I have to get divorced?”

Looking at Tokudou-san, Rina returned to her usual self, but she lacked energy in her words, perhaps because she wasn’t feeling well.

Tokudou-san continued relentlessly, as I had requested.

“You said you couldn’t think of any reason to get divorced?”

“Of course! It’s absolutely unforgivable.”

“It’s not about forgiveness. That’s not a valid excuse.”

“Uh, ugh… It doesn’t matter what you say! If I say I won’t forgive you, then I won’t forgive you…!”

There it is, Rina’s arrogance.

Whenever things don’t go her way, she does this. She seems to treat everyone like a queen.

While I was stunned, Rina looked up at me with moist eyes.

“S, so… you? This is all wrong, isn’t it? If you say it’s a joke now, I’ll forgive you… So, let’s go back to being the lovey-dovey couple we were before…?”

“Ha…?”

What is she saying?

Since she couldn’t win against the lawyer with words, is she trying to make me feel sorry for her? And besides, she’s so condescending. That makes me even angrier.

But before I could open my mouth, Tokudou-san continued her attack with a cold look.

“Like he said, this is no joke. We wouldn’t be here for a joke.”

“You’re so loud…! Shut up!”

“No, I won’t be quiet. I was hired by your husband. It’s obvious this is no joke.”

“You, you…!”

“You said you couldn’t think of a reason, right? Shall I show you those reasons then?”

Tokudou-san adjusted her glasses with her hand and started to look through the envelope she was holding.

Here comes the counterattack. Be prepared, Rina.
