“Officers, over here.”
When the hostess opens the door, two policemen are standing there.
One was a young man in a neat uniform. The other was a middle-aged, bear-like man.
The young policeman arrogantly ordered the middle-aged policeman to come in.
The middle-aged policeman nodded his head in annoyance and entered the door.
The man was huge.
He was almost as tall as the ceiling of the bar and bigger than Isaac and the hostess combined.
He was a man in his forties or so, with a square face and a haphazardly growing beard, wearing brown pants, a vest, and a tie.
At first glance, he appeared solid and immaculate, but there was a hint of fatigue and a sense of ennui about him.
Although he was a huge man, his back was rounded, his eyes were stagnant, and he seemed to lack any kind of energy.
Everything he wore was of the highest quality, but upon closer inspection, one could see that his shoes still had mud on the toes, his pants were worn, and there was a yellow stain on the collar of his shirt.
Isaac might be able to get away with such an absent-minded policeman.
Isaac, whose vision narrowed like that of a trapped rat, searched for the right moment to run.
But he couldn’t move.
The atmosphere the policeman exuded was completely different from that of an ordinary person.
Despite his exhaustion, he was aware of everything around him, and just standing still exuded a pressure that felt like it was crushing him.
He couldn’t make a single bad move, let alone get past him.
Once this man was at the door, escape was impossible.
Isaac gave up his futile struggle and threw himself limply onto the bar stool.
“Is this what you call a suspicious person?”
The huge policeman said in a tired voice and crept over to look at Isaac.
Isaac also looked at the policeman’s face as he covered him.
Then Isaac and the policeman screamed “ah” at the same time.
“NTR’ed King!”
“Isn’t it Desnos (デスノス)? Is that what they call me now?”
Isaac had a complicated expression at his updated derogatory name.
Desnos was more than a year older than Isaac and had been an old acquaintance of Isaac’s since before he took the throne.
But what he hadn’t realized was that on the one hand, Desnos was the commander of the knights stationed at the royal castle, and there was no way he was going to come to a scene like this on a tip from a citizen and be bossed around by such a young colleague.
On the other hand, the Desnos Isaac knew was a stylish man who cared about his appearance more than anyone else and had a dynamic personality, so he didn’t make such a vague impression as now. But the man now called Desnos was far from that. He was a completely different person from the Desnos Isaac knew.
Here, as if he had met his enemy of 100 years, the policeman’s eyes were peeled, his face flushed, his teeth gnashing, and he stared at Isaac like a demon.
His face, full of rage, was not the Desnos Isaac knew.
Desnos didn’t look back at the hostess but spoke in a voice that contained his anger.
“Thank you for your cooperation, Mis. I will take full responsibility for sending this suspicious person to the gallows, so please rest assured.”
“Eh, suddenly the death penalty?”
Isaac was startled, but Desnos grabbed Isaac by the neck and carried him up like an Argentine backbreaker.
“Excuse me then.”
Still carrying Isaac, Desnos bows to the hostess and turns to leave the bar.
“Wait a minute, Desnos, what happened? Why are you barging into a place like this?”
Isaac, with his neck and waist pinned, manages to flail his arms and scream, and Desnos stops walking.
“What happened?”
Fury fills the hands around Isaac’s neck. He could break his neck at any moment.
Desnos screamed in a voice that could’ve shaken the bar.
“It all fell apart because of you!”
“Yes?”
Isaac has no idea why Desnos is angry. And the irritated Desnos screamed louder.
“You know that the survival of the monarchy is now in doubt because of your disappearance.”
“Of course. If Lovecraft and Mina win the election, the monarchy will be abolished and the royal family destroyed.”
“If that happens, we nobles will no longer be nobles.”
“Isn’t this about your title?”
“You idiot! You don’t know how important that title is. The title of nobility alone would allow people to trust in the future without having to think twice.”
“Huh?”
“You are stealing the titles of many nobles and trying to steal our food and confidence in the future!”
“Huh?”
“Throwing away such an important matter and disappearing on your own is unworthy of a king. Do you understand that?”
“…”
Isaac understand what Desnos said, and it is not hard to see his point. But why did he use such abstract, indirect, and theatrical language?
Isaac, who has known Desnos for a long time, knew very well that when Desnos uses this kind of language, it is usually when he is hiding something trivial behind the scenes.
