Helping People and the Caller and Teachers
We went to a cafe for lunch after watching a movie. Since my dad owns a fancy Western restaurant, I prefer such places. So, I took her to a Hawaiian cafe near the movie theater.
“Senpai, I’ve never been to a Hawaiian cafe before. It’s exotic and stylish.”
Mom also likes this cafe, and we used to come here often on our days off.
“The loco moco and pancakes here are excellent.”
We ordered the loco moco for lunch and decided to share the fluffy pancakes. Although the garlic shrimp is also delicious, I decided not to order it since it was a date.
Before our movie date, I remembered that this restaurant was nearby and made a reservation. It was a good decision because the restaurant gets crowded on holidays. I already knew the length of the movie, so making the reservation was easy.
“But you must be used to going on dates, Senpai. Regardless of your appearance, you make a great partner. When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a long line of people waiting, and to be honest, I was a little nervous. But I was surprised when you told me that you had already made a reservation.”
“Well, I did my best.”
Thanks to my mother and an ex-girlfriend—I don’t want to remember—I’m pretty well-trained. Even though dating Miyuki is a thing of the past, I feel that experience is in my blood.
“I’m glad to see an unexpected side of you. Besides, it’s a high point for a girl when you suggest sharing a dessert…”
Yes, that too. Thanks to Mom. She always likes to have something sweet, but she hesitates to order a whole serving because she’s worried about the calories.
“Really? I also want something sweet, so don’t worry about it.”
In such situations, there’s no need to say anything extra. Just act like a gentleman.
“Thank you.”
Ichijo-san smiled happily, hinting that she was aware of my attentiveness.
We had a lovely meal together. Eating with Ichijo-san always brings a smile to my face. It’s a happy time.
We finished our meal and stepped outside. From now on, we would go shopping together. It seemed she wanted to look at various goods at the department store in front of the station.
As we were enjoying ourselves, something unexpected happened.
“Ugh!”
A Grandpa walking in front of us fell down, clutching his chest as if in pain.
“Eh!”
Ichijo-san shouted, looking at him with a worried expression.
I could only watch the scene, unsure of what had happened.
The Grandpa stopped moving and was breathing painfully.
This is not good.
When I had a part-time summer job working at an event, I took a CPR class as part of my training. I remember the faces of the firefighters who came in as instructors. What do we do in this situation? They taught me what to do in emergencies like this.
I had no choice but to act. Don’t worry; I can use what I learned in that rescue training.
“This is bad. Ichijo-san, go and find an AED.”
First of all, I needed to do everything I could to save this Grandpa’s life.
“But where…”
Ichijo-san was frozen, her face pale.
“I saw a police car parked earlier. I’m sure there’s an AED in the police car. Even if they don’t have one, a police officer might know where to find one. Convenience stores often have them too. I’ll call an ambulance and take care of him.”
“Oh, okay, I understand.”
She ran to the police car.
I did what I was taught in training, checking the Grandpa’s consciousness, calling for help from those around me, and performing CPR.
A kind man immediately called for an ambulance.
Without hesitation, I acted to help the Grandpa.
Ichijo-san soon returned with a policeman and an AED.
A nurse, who seemed to have just gotten off work and noticed the commotion, also came to help.
I don’t remember much about the next few minutes.
Takayanagi’s PoV
“Takayanagi-sensei, sorry about the holiday.”
The principal apologized and looked genuinely sorry.
“No, I originally had club activities…”
I’m the advisor of the shogi club, and with a tournament coming up, I had to work today, my first day after summer vacation, to supervise the club activities.
“Thank you for contacting me immediately,” said Iwai-sensei.
We had hoped to hold the meeting yesterday, but the principal was on a business trip, so the meeting was postponed to today, Saturday, turning it into an emergency meeting.
“But if the person who took the picture is a student, we’re in trouble. We need to find them and protect them immediately.”
The principal looked impatient and worried.
“Yes, they were brave but reckless to do this. If news of their actions gets out, even to the soccer club, they might try to retaliate against them. And if this turns into an attack…”
Iwai-sensei also looked worried. This is the worst situation.
“Takayanagi-sensei, do you have a solution? I don’t want any more students to get hurt.”
The principal’s concern was evident.
“Yes. I did a lot of research yesterday. Kondo and Amada were absent because they weren’t feeling well, which was probably when the photo was taken. Since the photographer sent us such a photo, they must have a deep grudge against Kondo and the others or be a friend of Aono. There’s likely a strong connection. I’ve narrowed down the list of students who fit these criteria from those who were absent or left early yesterday.”
I quickly showed the list of candidates. The photographer must be on this list. We need to protect our students. I don’t want any more young people to get hurt over this.
